Westerly Creek Elementary School Reviews

I agree with the comment that sometimes it seems like a small group of 'PTA Mom's' runs the school, which can cause other parents to feel left out or discriminated against. However, the quality of teachers is high and our children have been successful in this environment. The principal has to keep a balance between more demanding parents and making sure that ALL the kids at the school get an EQUAL chance of success. The facilities are brand new and the classrooms have all new equipment and are spacious. Last year, the school had a pretty good enrichment program, but nothing this year so far. Plus Bill Roberts kids are dismissed early (1pm) on Fridays which is something you will have to take into account if you are considering sending your children here. Overall we are moderately happy with the school, but there is definitely room for improvement.

Our family loves this school. Our oldest is finishing his 4th year at the school. Both of our kids have had high quality teachers who differentiate instructions for the varying ability levels in the classroom. This year the students have Music, Drama, Art and Physical Education. The level of parent involvement is high and extremely productive. The principal is a strong leader who puts the needs of the children above all else.

Overall Westerly Creek is a very good school. Trich Lea is a great principal who strikes a strong balance between parent involvement and responsiveness to teachers. There is a core group of parents who exert a lot of control over the school. Usually, this is very helpful, but other parents may feel ignored or dismissed. The school is in a period of transition by splitting from Bill Roberts. Principal Lea will be going to Roberts along with most of the teachers and the historically most involved parents. Parents staying at WCE feel that the school will continue to do well, but there are significant unknowns right now. WCE is a true neighborhood school, so don't expect resources to go into creating a specialized academic program. Its purpose is for the neighborhood and many parents feel strongly that it stay that way.

We have a kindergartener and a 3 year old in the ECE program & have been very pleased with the teachers & classmates in both classes. Kids get lots of personal attention & the curriculum is very rigorous. Principal Trich Lea is a strong leader, admired by the teaching staff & is the glue holding an excellent staff together. Parental involvement is amazing with a large number of volunteer parents & a great PTA which raises a significant amount of money for the school. Specials include PE, art, drama, music, and after-school enrichment programs.

We have a first grader at WCE, and she was fortunate enough to have one of the best educators we have ever met for a Kindergarten teacher. It set the bar high for first grade expectationss, and we haven't been disappointed, despite the different style of teaching compared to other first grade classes. Parent involvement is extremely high, on par with Bromwell Elementary or U. Park, which sets the bar for DPS year after year. The two school campus will work for one more year (07-08), then it will be time to make two joined, but distinct schools. We moved to Stapleton because it offered a unique educational experience, and we are happy with our decision 2-1/2 years later.

My child has been going to Westerly Creek for two years. The teachers are great but they need leadership. The principal has no control over the school. We are in search of another school!

I am extremely happy to have my kindergartner at this school. Anyone who says that the teachers are not engaging, and that parental involvement is low doesn't know this school. My experience has been one of intense community support and a fun, safe, dynamic learning environment. If you want the true story, just visit the school. There is no 'standard drudgery' going on there!

This is a new school in a new neighborhood. The facilities are great. So far, we haven't been wowed by the teaching, though, or the curriculum. It doesn't seem there's much emphasis placed on really engaging the kids, there seems to be little magic. It's the standard drudgery.
